  • Notes
    • In his book on Cypress Creek Christian Church and Cemetery, George B. Simpson states that the Mathis family pioneer in Union County, Kentucky was a Tory from North Carolina.

Dates of birth and death for Martin are taken from two internet sources who did not cite their sources. This information should be considered unproven, as well as any connection with William Mathis. Martin and his brother, Daniel, are said to have been raised by their grandmother in Reading County, Pennsylvania. The family may have come from France.

They both appear in the 1800 Henderson County, Kentucky Tax List.

From "Ancestors Of The Lansden Family", by J. Keith Lansden accessed 2 April 2007 at http://www.thelansdens.com/Ancestors/aqwn05.htm:

Martin MATHIS: This is from "History of Mathis Family" by William Clarender Mathis.

"Martin Mathis was a cabinet maker. He took in a partner who stole the money and Martin killed him. Martin moved around some before settling on the West bank of Clarks river."

      Keith Lansden continues as follows:

"The 1799 tax list for Henderson County shows Martin and Daniel (his brother) living on Lost Creek at Walkers Settlement. I believe this area was owned by Martin's first wife Nancy Walker's father. The 1810 Henderson County census shows a Martin Matthews and his wife, both aged 26 to 45 with a son and a daughter, both under 10. Matthews was the way Mathis was pronounced back then. Also in this census it shows his brother Daniel Matthews, aged 26 to 45, with two females aged 16 to 26 (probably his wife and a sister or sister-in-law) and a female over 45 (his mother or mother-in-law) and two females under 10 and a male under 10.

"There are a lot of people on Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com that have Martin's twin sons Clarender and Dempsey being born in Todd Co. I don't agree with this because Todd Co. was not formed until 1820 (from Logan and Christian Co.) and Clarender and Dempsey where born in 1817. I am pretty sure Martin Mathis never left the (Logan-Christian-Henderson-Union) area (which is the same place) that Martin lived in from 1799 to the early to mid 1820s (from what I have record of). Martin is in the 1799 Tax Roll in Henderson Co.- The 1810 census in Henderson Co. and The 1820 Census in Union Co which is all the same area. I believe they left Union Co., Kentucky to Calloway Co., Kentucky (now Marshall Co.) between 1823 and 1827. I have Martin's Daughter Elizabeth having her first child Martin Mathis Liles being born 5 Sep 1823 in Union Co., Kentucky and her second child Mary Elizabeth Liles being born 27 Mar 1827 in Calloway Co., Kentucky.

"I noticed too that People have some of Martin's children being born in Rowan Co., Kentucky in Eastern Kentucky. I know this is wrong because Rowan Co. was not formed until 1856 and also I don't believe that they were in Eastern Kentucky after 1799 (maybe before). I think all of Martin's children were born in the same place with his children with Nancy Walker being born in Christian and Henderson Cos. (Same place) and his children from Elizabeth Hooper being born in Henderson and Union Cos. (Same place). I think all of his Children from Elizabeth were born in Union Co. except William (their oldest) who was born in Henderson before Union Co. was formed from Henderson." [1, 15]
